The Unit investigates reports of alleged cruelty and neglect and carries out welfare inspections at places where equines are kept or used.
The objective is to assess conditions and improve welfare. Depending on the circumstances, inspectors may work with owners toward remedial action and better standards of care. In serious cases, intervention can include removal of an animal and legal action where appropriate.
Public reporting is an important part of this work. If you are concerned about the welfare of a horse or donkey, contact the Unit and provide as much clear information as possible so the concern can be assessed appropriately.

Information is received about a possible equine welfare issue.
Assessment
Conditions are evaluated by the appropriate welfare personnel.
Remedial action
Where possible, owners are guided toward necessary welfare improvements.
Escalation
Serious situations may require stronger intervention or legal action.
